Without deep and profound darkness in our world, the glimmering of light would almost certainly go unnoticed—merely a continuation of normalcy and sameness—nothing all that spectacular. There is perhaps no one who understands this better than Chelson Strong, otherwise known as Kaveman, the multifaceted Detroit M.C. currently poised to take the nation and the world by storm. Kaveman is many things—humorous, smooth, aggressive and insightful. Growing up in Detroit, Kave has witnessed firsthand some of the coldest, most ruthless sides of humanity. Fortunately, he has been blessed with a keen intellect and the gift of flow, which has allowed him to turn his most dire experiences into earnest and thought-provoking artistic expressions. He casts light upon shadowy subjects such as ignorance, hate and despair with songs like “Depression,” a diatribe against the false idol of material gain. Still, Kave finds time to laugh about the brighter things, as in his song “California,” where he looks forward to his future: Kaveman moved his headquarters from Detroit to the San Francisco Bay Area last year. Son of the acclaimed Motown songwriter Barret Strong, this Motor City rapper began honing his musical abilities at the age of 14, working as a writer and lead lyricist for The Crazy Youngstas, a group he formed with childhood friends.
